The Results Are In: My GeneSNP Journey Part 4

 Author: Sean Wells

While I was waiting for my Health Action Plan to arrive, I started doing some of the things that are recommended as good ideas for just about everyone. I started exercising again, I reduced my intake of sweets and—following my own advice—I started taking a multivitamin.

Once my Health Action Plan was delivered, I immediately printed a copy so I could go over it with a highlighter—I’m a little bit Old School—and do some comparing and contrasting between what I thought I was doing and what I actually was. There was a LOT of information packed into this report, and I was able to use all of it, but to list everything would require a series of its own. Instead, I’ll outline some of the key points that really made a difference:

  • B-vitamins: it turned out that I’d only been getting between 50 and 75 percent of what was recommended for me on a daily basis. Changing this definitely made a difference in my energy levels, focus and attitude.
  • Vitamin D: again, I was averaging only about two-thirds of what my genetic profile suggested was best. I made similar changes, and noticed similar improvements.
  • Calcium: I fully admit to having disregarded calcium as something I needed—as a male, I sort of figured this wasn’t a concern for me (only women get osteoporosis, right?), but my Health Action Plan made me think otherwise. Based on my profile, I was getting less than one-third of what I actually need. I’ve made this change too, and though the results aren’t as obvious, I’m thinking they will be in another 30 years or so.

One of the biggest changes I’ve noticed, however, is in body composition. As I’d written in my first post about this journey, I’ve always been about average weight. That said, I have often suspected I suffer from the problem of what is sometimes called Skinny-Fat. This basically means having a healthy Body Mass Index, but an above-average, potentially unhealthy level of actual body fat—some might think of it as “The Last 10 Pounds”.

After a few weeks of eating and exercising based on my Health Action Plan, this has definitely changed. While I knew that GeneSNP provided a diet and exercise profile and recommendations based on genetics—which does sound impressive—I quite honestly didn’t expect the results to be as apparent.

In a way, this provides the best illustration of the fundamental benefit of GeneSNP that I’d always thought was getting missed. It’s a big part of why I decided to take this journey, and it’s something that I, for one, really needed.

It’s hard to know what exact results will come from fulfilling potential, but it seems like they are always a pleasant surprise. The difference between living at 75 or 80 percent and living at 100 percent may not seem like much on paper, but the feeling is very, very different.

Needless to say, everything has been great so far, but my GeneSNP journey—just like any other—is ongoing. As things move from the short-term to the long-term, more results will be reported, and more experiences highlighted. For now, however, I hope this little story of mine has inspired others to make their own journey, and to live at 100 percent.

My GeneSNP Journey Part 3

Author: Sean Wells

On the afternoon that my GeneSNP kit arrived I was definitely ready to get started. As I’d written in my first post, the more I knew about GeneSNP, the more I wanted to know.

It was all pretty straightforward, from what I could tell: swabbing each cheek, for one minute each, would give one sample and one back-up sample for the lab to use. The samples had to be left out for drying over the course of a few hours, then sent out in the prepaid envelope.

This certainly wasn’t a problem–because it’s specified that the sample be given first thing in the morning and my mail typically gets delivered and picked up in the afternoon, the arrangement was pretty much perfect. I went to bed and dreamt about a future filled with advanced genetic knowledge (I’ve been known to be a bit of a science fiction fan).

Gene SNPThe next morning I woke up and followed directions: did a leisurely bit of swabbing on each cheek, then set everything aside for safekeeping–in my house, this usually means on top of the fridge–until it was due to be placed in the envelope. In picking up the envelope, I noticed something for the first time: the envelope was not for the Postal Service, but for Federal Express. I was immediately impressed (“Wow…FedEx delivers DNA”) and then slightly worried. Was this going to foil my plans?

After just a few seconds I realized that Federal Express visits our company every day–and in the afternoon–so everything was still on. Even if I hadn’t been lucky this way, I naturally could have found a drop-off pretty easily, so while this is no major ordeal, it’s worth mentioning that a quick drive might be involved in order to get your sample sent off as quickly as possible.

That afternoon, off it went. At this point, I was really looking forward to my DNA analysis helping me to turn things up a notch with my health plan which, to be honest, might have taken a backseat in recent years. I was definitely invested, getting motivated, and already making plans for what I could start doing until the results came back.

My GeneSNP Journey: Part 2

Author: Sean Wells

In the first part of this series, I explained a little about what was behind my decision to order a GeneSNP kit. As things progressed, one of the questions that I was finding out was really worth asking was whether or not I knew all there was to know about being healthy. While ordering my GeneSNP Kit–which was the easy part–it occurred to me I quite possibly did not. That part was a little harder.

This realization was exciting for sure, but maybe a little worrying as well. Like anyone with Internet access, I had all the information I could ever want and more–but that meant I had access to all of the misinformation too. The fact that there are entire sites dedicated to filtering through all that’s out there is testimony to the sheer amount of flawed studies, misdirection and even simple, honest mistakes that end up online.

In addition to that, even well-established information comes into question from time to time. A recent post I’ve edited indicated that RDAs might be enough for health hazards, but are not necessarily established with maximum benefits in mind, and made it clear that most people aren’t even aware of what nutrients they are missing. As I’d mentioned in the first part of this series, what prompted all this was the question of whether I was doing my best, and also if I was doing what was best for me.

That final part led me to a final realization. While there are many general “good practices” out there for health, wellness and fitness, these basic bits of advice are limited by a lack of information, and in this case, it’s information that only I can give.

By providing a DNA sample and answering a simple questionnaire, I was going to be the one providing the missing link to all the answers I needed about my own best health. All things considered, I began to understand that was really the least I could do.

I was now looking forward to my kit arriving with ever-growing anticipation. This was going to be good!

My GeneSNP Journey: Part 1

Like most people nowadays, I thought I knew pretty well what genetics were, but until holding this job I wouldn’t say I was familiar with Epigenetics, Nutrigenetics or Nutrigenomics—reading this article helped quite a bit. I think this is where my eyes may have started to open a little, even if I didn’t know it at the time.

Like most people, I felt like I had a good working knowledge of what it meant to be healthy and how to do it (it’s “eat right and exercise”, right?). I’d figured that simple phrasing and of course whatever genetic cards I’d been dealt would be enough to carry me through, and of course if they weren’t, what was I going to do about it, really?

Along these same lines, for most of my life, I’d always thought that my genetics, whatever their nature, were something to be accepted, tolerated and maybe, every once in a while, cursed—depending on my mood. Again, I felt like genetics were something that were just sort of there, unchangeable, and if I happened to be feeling inadequate, I could always blame them.

To be fair, while I certainly have nothing to brag about in this area, I don’t really have anything worthy of complaining about either. I’m about average height, about average weight, and in a roomful of people or on a street corner in the city, I imagine I would just blend in: Caucasian male, medium build, dark hair. I wouldn’t stand out, and chances are good I wouldn’t particularly be noticed, one way or the other.

In truth, it may actually be this overall sense of “average-ness”—so to speak—that has sometimes made me pause and wonder a little about things like doing my best and making the best choices. In general, I’ve always done just fine on my own, but what if I had a little more information? Suppose I had some guidance? Could I do more, maybe, than “just fine”?

This first thought, as it turns out, was the start of my GeneSNP Journey. I’d started to know a little about it, and the more I knew, the more I wanted to know. I’d always believed there was no substitute for experience–maybe this was a way for me to get a few answers and stop wondering.
As might be obvious by now, I was sold. The next step was to order a kit.

Natural Relief for Allergies...

Natural Relief for Allergies – Pycnogenol® is the Answer

Posted on by Crystal Shelton

The body’s immune system plays a very important role in respiratory health, specifically in conditions like hay fever/allergies and asthma. Allergens, such as pollen, pet dander or dust, can cause the immune system to be triggered, igniting inflammatory responses which in turn lead to a series of uncomfortable symptoms we know all too well.

Pycnogenol® is a natural plant extract from the bark of the maritime pine tree which grows exclusively along the coast of southwest France. The extract is a combination of procyandins, bioflavonoids and organic acids and has been clinically studied for a wide range of benefits. Pycnogenol® has been shown to help in a variety of health areas due to its four basic properties: acting as a powerful antioxidant, acting as a natural anti-inflammatory, selectively binding to collagen and elastin and aiding in the production of nitric oxide which helps to dilate blood vessels.

Mostly due to its anti-inflammatory properties, Pycnogenol®has a defined role in respiratory health, specifically with asthma and allergies. In human studies, it has been shown to help normalize the immune response by inhibiting Nuclear Factor-Kappa B and lowering the sensitivity level for triggering an immune response. Pycnogenol® has also been shown to inhibit the release of histamine from mast cells. When an allergic person comes into contact with an allergen, these cells release histamine which triggers the onset of symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, wheezing, itching, etc. – also referred to as hay fever. Hay fever is a huge concern, but many of the prescription drugs have unwanted side effects, such as drowsiness, and consumers are looking for that natural alternative.

Pycnogenol® has been shown in human clinical studies to block histamine release and thus decrease these allergic response symptoms. Additionally, other research identified Pycnogenol’s effects of improved breathing for people suffering from allergic asthma.

Vitamin D - Comparing 2,000 IU/day vs. 5,000 IU/day

March 29, 2012 -- John Cannell, MD (Courtesy of Vitamin D Council)

Dr. Terry Diamond and colleagues of St. George’s Hospital in New South Wales just published the first head-to-head comparison of 5,000 IU/day to 2,000 IU/day. Remember, the Food and Nutrition Board says 4,000 IU/day is the upper limit, but Dr. Diamond knows the pharmacology of vitamin D well enough to know that quite a few people will still have inadequate levels at 4,000 IU/day.

He recruited 30 patients with vitamin D levels less than 20 ng/ml and put half on 5,000 IU/day and half on 2,000 IU/day for three months. He measured a number of things, the most important of which was muscle strength.

Diamond T, Wong YK, Golombick T. Effect of oral cholecalciferol 2,000 versus 5,000 IU on serum vitamin D, PTH, bone and muscle strength in patients with vitamin D deficiency. Osteoporos Int. 2012 Mar 16.

After 3 months of 2,000 IU/day the vitamin D levels averaged 30 ng/ml (75 nmol/L), meaning about half the patients were still vitamin D deficient. Not so with the 5,000 IU/day group. The average vitamin D level was 45 ng/ml (114 nmol/L), right in the “natural range.” In addition, 93% of the patients had levels higher than 30 ng/ml compared to the 2,000 IU/day group, where only 45 % had levels above 30 ng/ml. Remember, one of the problems with daily dosing is that you must rely on the patient to take their medication. As an old GP, I am here to tell you not all patients take their meds; the ones that get me are the ones who look me straight in the eye and tell me something I know is not true.

In Dr. Diamond’s well-designed study, changes in grip strength compared to baseline were very significant, while the improvements in timed tests of sitting to standing and the 6-meter walk test also improved, but not significantly. What surprised me was that the improvements did not vary with dosage. That is, the 2,000 IU/day had the same improvements in grip strength as did the 5,000 IU/day, meaning muscle strength improvements are the most dramatic at changes in lower ranges of vitamin D levels. By that, I mean if your level is 5 ng/ml to start out and you get to up to 20 ng/ml, your percentage improvement in muscle strength will be much more dramatic than someone who went from 20 to 35 ng/ml.

I am glad to see Australians using daily dosing of vitamin D. Many of the “Stoss” doses, 100,000 IU/month or 600,000/year are not physiological, and are dangerous. Vitamin D was made every day in the skin of our ancestors and we should strive to replicate such dosing schedules. How much do we need? To quote Dr. Diamond, “This study demonstrates that the administration of oral vitamin D at 5,000 IU daily is superior to 2,000 IU daily for 3 months to treat mild to moderate vitamin D deficiency."

What makes Isotonix® Vitamin D with K2 product unique?

Isotonix Vitamin D with K2 contains vitamin D3, the metabolically active form of vitamin D, along with vitamin K2, a form of vitamin K which supports vascular health and calcium utilization. Vitamin D plays an important role in bone health, heart health and immune support while working with vitamin K to support normal absorption of calcium and promote healthy arteries. Isotonix Vitamin D is the first of its kind to deliver both of these powerful vitamins with isotonic delivery.
Vitamin K is included in Isotonix Vitamin D with K2 because of its unique partnership with vitamin D. Vitamins K and D work together to support calcium absorption and utilization. Vitamin K supports the normal delivery of calcium to the bones and promotes healthy arteries.
At least two naturally occurring forms of vitamin K have been identified and are known as K1 and K2. While there are many similarities between these two forms of vitamin K, they are distinguished by their important differences. The most significant difference between K1 and K2 is their chemical structure, which results in different pharmacokinetic properties. Vitamin K1 is retained primarily in the liver where, at high doses, it may interfere with the action of warfarin and other anticoagulant medications.
Vitamin K2 has a different mechanism of action. It is transported primarily to bones and blood vessels. Vitamin K2 helps to maintain bone mass, support calcium utilization and promote elasticity of blood vessels.
Some studies have concluded that vitamin K2 does not interfere with anticoagulant medications.* However, most products containing vitamin K (including K1 and/or K2) warn users taking anticoagulants not to take the product. If you are currently taking warfarin or another anticoagulant medication, you should consult your physician before taking any product containing vitamin K1 or K2.

Absorption: Liquid Supplements vs. Pills

When comparing supplements, the question often arises – should one go with Liquids or Pills?

There have been many studies done, and the resounding answer is that the advantages of liquid far outweigh pill-based products. One of the most referred-to statements is found in the Physician’s Desk Reference on page 1542. In this widely used medical reference book, it is noted that liquids can be absorbed up to 98%. Whereas it states the absorption rate of pills and capsules is 5% - 18%. This means that 80-95% of the ingredients contained in pills are excreted or eliminated from the body, which in itself can be very difficult on one’s system. When this is translated into monetary terms, for every $100 spent on pills, approximately $90 ends up being flushed down the toilet. In contrast, liquid forms of the same supplement have an absorption rate of up to 98%.

Advantages of Liquids: - Liquid absorption rate is up to 98% - Liquids are prepared utilizing fresh elements - Fewer doses required to receive the same amount absorbed into the body - Liquids are far simpler to swallow, particularly for seniors - Liquid ingredients are not compressed, which would require additional digestion before assimilation into the bloodstream - Liquids are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, resulting in faster (desired) effects - Liquids contain no buffers, binders or fillers, which would delay digestion, taking more time to enter the bloodstream - Liquids do not “clog” sewers, cesspools, or septic systems –

Up to 98% of liquids are absorbed, while only 10-12% of pills are absorbed, leaving roughly 90% of pills ending up in our waste system.

Pills: - Pills are hard to swallow for seniors - The absorption rate of pills is, at best, 18% - The digestion rate for pills takes (literally) hours, with a minimal effect - Pill ingredients can end up being powdered as long as one year after being collected or harvested - Powdered pill ingredients are compressed into pills using buffers, binders and fillers, requiring additional digestion by the body to either break down the capsules or the ingredients - Buffers, binders and fillers affect the bioavailability, reducing the absorption rate and effectiveness of the ingredient(s)

[Excerpt from an article by Dr. David Friedman DC, ND, a certified Doctor of Naturopathy, a Life College graduate, noted educator, lecturer on nutrition, and board qualified chiropractic neurologist.]

My views on nutrition changed one day a few years ago when a patient came in and told me that she was having her septic tank repaired. She told me what was causing the blockage... hundreds of undigested vitamin pills, some of them with the brand names still readable. After hearing this disturbing news, I did some research of my own. I found in Tacoma Washington, 250,000 pounds of undigested vitamin and mineral pills are pulled out of the sewers every six weeks. In Salt Lake City, over 150 gallons of vitamins and mineral pills show up in their filters every month. Even those pills listed as "all natural" often have added fillers and coatings that inhibit absorption. The Physician's Desk Reference shows that vitamins and minerals in pill form are only 10 to 20% absorbed by the body.

That means for every $100 your spending on nutrients you are literally flushing 80-90% of it down the toilet. Because of this lack of absorption, companies must use mega doses of nutrients and this can cause a taxation on the kidneys. According to the National Advisory Board, 100mg consumed in a tablet form translates into a minute stabilized 8.3mg concentration in the blood.Liquids offer up to a 98% absorption rate because they bypass the digestive process and go directly into the bloodstream and into the cells within a matter of minutes. Not only are liquid nutrients more convenient, they also allow those with irritable bowel syndrome, hiatal hernias and diverticulitis to take nutrients that may irritate them in a pill or capsule form. The Benefits of Pycnoginal are incredible!!!

Clinical studies showed that Pycnogenol increased collagen production by 29%, hyaluronic acid production by 44%, elasticity by 25%, and hydration by 8%.

It also improves mental performance, including memory and attention. “We know that nutrients play a role in how the brain functions,” said Dr. Steven Lamm, speaking specifically of young people diagnosed with ADD who when given Pycnogenol in a lab setting and monitored over time, improved their test scores.

The research also demonstrated that Pycnogenol helped people who have suffered a heart attack, when taken on top of their medication cocktail. It improved the performance endothelial cells, which can end up made inactive by fat in the blood stream.

When patients were give Pycnogenol then tested over time, there’s an improvement in endothelial health—and that means an improvement in overall health, which is Isotonix’s overall goal.

Why use the Gene SNP cheek swab instead of a Blood Sample?

Question:
Why use the Gene SNP cheek swab instead of a Blood Sample?

Answer:
Blood sampling is a snap shot photo of a person's nutrient status...at that moment of time. If you blood sampled the same person 2 days before or later, you would likely get a different analysis of the person's needs.
Using cells from the cheek is designed to go after customizing a person's dietary/supplement/lifestyle/exercise needs based upon their genetic code...which is a constant.
Genetic need vs. Balancing bloodwork are 2 VERY different approaches to healthcare choices. There is value to both, but our Gene SNP is going after determining each patient's TRUE baseline need. That need, once met with the right recommendations, can then be "tweaked" to address bloodwork or current health conditions.

Primary Benefits of the Gene SNP™ DNA Analysis:

  • Learn about your genetic risk based on variations in your unique genetic code
  • Understand how your current nutrition, exercise and lifestyle choices interact with your unique genetic code
  • Make informed decisions regarding eating habits, lifestyle choices and exercise based on your genes
  • Learn how market-leading Isotonix® nutraceutical supplementation recommended in your personalized Health Action Plan can help you maintain your optimum health
  • Track changes and progress in your Health Action Plan and, after following recommendations, update your Online Customer Profile to determine whether you have new nutrition, exercise, lifestyle or supplementation recommendations.

What Makes Isotonix Calcium Plus Unique?

If a tablet cannot be broken down sufficiently in the stomach, then calcium will not be absorbed!

Many calcium supplements exist in the marketplace, but only Market America's Isotonix Calcium Plus delivers a potent package of calcium and complementary nutrients through an isotonic system of delivery. This translates into a lower cost overall when compared to calcium supplements in pill form by making more of the active ingredients available to the body. Don't be misled by ingredient amounts. What really counts is the amount of active ingredients that your body can ultimately use.

Isotonix Calcium Plus paves the way for powerful results since it is in an isotonic form rather than a tablet. An isotonic fluid is nature's own nutrient delivery system. Calcium in tablet form is difficult for your body to absorb. People may fail to absorb tablet calcium supplements because the calcium supplement is not blended with vitamin D and magnesium; these are necessary to aid in the absorption and use of calcium.

In addition to binders, some calcium supplements may have additives such as chlorine and other chemicals. Even assuming no binders are used in the calcium tablet, the body must still break down a hard-pressed tablet into a usable form. If the tablet cannot be broken down sufficiently in the stomach, then the calcium will not be absorbed. If you can't break down the calcium, your body is robbed of the calcium needed to support bodily functions.

Isotonix Delivery

Isotonix® dietary supplements are a replica of the body's own fluids such as tears, intravenous fluids, plasma and breast milk. All fluids in the human body have a certain concentration, which is called the osmotic pressure. The body's common osmotic pressure -- which is isotonic -- allows a consistent maintenance of all body tissues. In order for a substance to be used in the body's metabolism, it must be changed to the isotonic state.
Isotonix Delivery

The efficiency of absorption is also affected by the digestive system. All substances that are acted on in the stomach go through a degradation process (breakdown) before they can be passed through the opening from the stomach to the small intestine to allow absorption. The digestive process can cause substances to lose some nutritive value and this whole process takes time!

The secret of the isotonic process is probably now becoming clear! When an isotonic substance enters the body, it will be absorbed into the bloodstream rapidly. With isotonic fluids, little nutritive value is lost, making the absorption of nutrients highly efficient. There is nothing artificial about it. An isotonic fluid is nature's own nutrient delivery system.

For Children in Need of Digestive, Metabolic or Neurological Support

Understanding the Need for a Multivitamin
This product was designed to serve children in need of digestive, metabolic or neurological support. For many reasons, it is very important for such children to take a multivitamin. Children often have very particular tastes in food and are unlikely to eat a wide variety of items. It is crucial that children in need of digestive, metabolic or neurological support consume a specially formulated multivitamin.

What Makes Might-a-Mins Spectrum Isotonix Multivitamin Unique?
Might-a-Mins® Spectrum Isotonix® Multivitamin provides children with the vitamins and minerals they need for optimal health. Many children do not obtain the necessary amounts of vitamins and minerals due to high consumption of processed foods, poor nutrient absorption and exposure to environmental toxins. Might-a-Mins Spectrum Isotonix Multivitamin provides children in need of neurological, metabolic or digestive support with a strong micronutrient foundation which promotes healthy development and supports optimal immune functions.*

Might-a-Mins Spectrum Isotonix Multivitamin provides children in need of neurological, metabolic or digestive support with a carefully selected blend of vitamins and minerals chosen for their exceptional bioavailability. Ingredients such as folinic acid and P5P (pyridoxal 5 phosphate) are included as the forms of folic acid and vitamin B6, respectively, because they are the metabolically active forms of these vitamins. Another benefit of Might-a-Mins Spectrum Isotonix Multivitamin is that it is delivered in an isotonic solution. Isotonic solutions bear the same chemical resemblance to blood and tears, allowing for superior delivery and complete absorption.

Why an Isotonix® formula is better than a standard children’s multivitamin?
Isotonix formulas are more effective than standard children’s multivitamin formulas because they offer the best way to get the maximum delivery of vitamins and minerals into the bloodstream. Isotonix formulas are also the fastest and most effective way to receive multivitamins. The stomach has very little work to do because the pH and tonicity are carefully designed to allow the stomach to quickly release all the nutrients into the small intestine. With the Isotonix Might-A-Mins formula, this process takes about five minutes, where a standard vitamin tablet can take up to four hours.

Does Isotonix Might-A-Mins contain artificial ingredients?
Isotonix Might-A-Mins does not contain any artificial sweeteners, such as saccharin or aspartame. Like all other Isotonix products, there are also no artificial preservatives or colors.

Do kids like the taste of Isotonix Might-A-Mins?
Isotonix Might-A-Mins contains fructose and glucose, which are both naturally occurring sugars. The sugars are also blended with a delicious, natural Mandarin orange flavor. The vitamins come in a fun, fast and easy-to-prepare powder, which will make your kids look forward to taking their vitamins every day.

Perfect Harmony for Mom & Baby

There are approximately 4 million live births in the United States every year. The average age of  first time mothers in the U.S. is 25, up from 21.4 in 1970. Even though we are waiting longer on average to have babies, we are having more of the: The birth rates and fertility rates are the highest they have ever been in the U.S.

While pregnancy and birth are very common occurrences, for many they seem mysterious and nerve-racking.  Though pregnancy is a life changing event, it doesn't have to be scary or a time of confusion. There is a lot of information available to allow your pregnancy to be a comfortable, healthy, exciting time.

Here are a few tips on how to have a healthy and happy pregnancy!

PRENATAL CARE
It is essential to make regular visits to an obstetrician or mid-wife to answer your questions and ensure your pregnancy is on track and free of complications. In the event that complications do arise, your obstetrician is trained to handle them properly. Choose an obstetrician  or mid-wife with whom you are comfortable, as this relationship will be very intimate over the next 40-plus weeks. Research has shown that a lack of prenatal care is associated with 40 percent increase in neonatal death.

PRENATAL VITAMIN
Most healthcare providers recommend taking a prenatal vitamin while trying to become pregnant, or at least as soon as you find out you are pregnant. Prenatal vitamins contain vital vitamins and minerals, such as iron, calcium, and folic acid, which are critical for proper fetal growth and development.

Folic acid, a B vitamin found mostly in leafy green vegetables and enriched grains, is especially important in early pregnancy. According to the FDA, 400mcg of folic acid daily reduces of neural tube defects.

Isotonix Prenatal Multivitamin is an excellent option for prenatal supplementation. Containing much of the Recommended Daily Allowance of the key vitamins and nutrients needed for an expectant mother, including 800mcg of folic acid. Isotonix Prenatal Multivitamin offers a unique isotonic-capable delivery system, eliminating the sometimes-difficult issue of pill swallowing for women plagued with morning sickness.*

DIET
Getting proper nutrition is an essential par4t of pregnancy. Remember that you are not only feeding your body right, but providing the nutrition for the baby as well. Most healthcare providers recommend getting approximately 300  more calories daily than usual - and of course these calories should come from unprocessed, healthy foods rather than junk food. With pregnancy often comes the ever-popular craving. It is okay to satisfy your cravings occasionally (however odd they may be!), but don't let them get in the way of proper nutrition.  Avoid dangerous substances such as alcohol and tobacco (including  second hand smoke) completely.

EXERCISE
Light exercise is very healthy and appropriate during pregnancy. It can alleviate the fatigue commonly associated with pregnancy, and may even help lighten some morning sickness symptoms. Studies also show that women who exercise regularly during pregnancy return to their pre-pregnancy weight faster than those who do not exercise during pregnancy.

Walking and swimming are excellent choices for light exercise that can be enjoyed by most pregnant women. If you frequently participated in rigorous exercise prior to pregnancy, you may even be able to continue the same routine during pregnancy, but do not exercise without first consulting with your doctor.

SLEEP
Everyone will tell you to sleep as much as you can now because your sleeping will never be the same after the baby is born. While this is true, sleep is also important for health reasons. Your body is taking on a brand new challenge that is very unlike its normal tasks -  it is vital to allow it to rest and rejuvenate as much as you can.

Pregnancy is a very momentous, miraculous time in a women's life. Take the time to enjoy it - there is a truly nothing like it. Keeping these tips in mind will ensure a healthy and happy pregnancy, topped only by the moment that sweet little one is placed in your arms for the first time. Congratulation!

5 Simple Tips for a Healthier Family

Our busy lifestyles can be hard on our family’s health. Rushing to and from school, work, sporting events, dance practice - can make it hard to find time to Eat Healthy.  We can also slip into the habit of choosing unhealthy snacks, often eating fast foods or spending our free time watching TV or in front of the computer.

These choices can be dangerous for our health and our children’s health – both now and long-term.  That’s why it’s so important to make a conscious decision to follow a Healthy Lifestyle.

What can I do?

Here are five simple ways for your Family to enjoy a Healthy Lifestyle and get back on track:

1. Get active every day

  • Regular physical activity is important for the healthy growth, development and well-being of children and young people
  • They should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, including vigorous activities that make them ‘huff and puff’
  • Parents should be good role models and have a positive attitude to being active

2. Choose water as a drink

  • Water is the best way to quench your thirst – and it doesn’t come with the added sugar found in fruit juices, soft drinks and other sweetened drinks
  • Reduced fat milk for children over two is a nutritious drink and a great source of calcium
  • Give kids whole fruit to eat, rather than offering fruit juices that have a lot of sugar

3. Eat more fruit and vegetables

  • Eating fruit and vegetables every day helps children grow and develop, boosts their vitality and can reduce the risk of many chronic diseases
  • Aim to eat two servings of fruit and five servings of vegetables every day.
  • Have fresh fruit available as a convenient snack and try to include fruit and vegies in every meal
  • A multivitamin can help children and young people meet their daily nutritional needs.

 4. Turn off the TV and get active
  • Time spent watching TV, surfing online or playing computer games is linked to kids becoming overweight or obese
  • Children and young people should spend no more than two hours a day on ‘small screen’ entertainment
  • Plan a range of active indoor and outdoor games or activities for your children, as alternatives to watching TV or playing on the computer

5. Eat fewer snacks and select healthier alternatives

  • Healthy snacks help children and young people meet their daily nutritional needs.
  • Snacks based on fruit and vegetables, reduced fat dairy products and whole grains are the healthiest choices
  • Avoid snacks that are high in sugar or saturated fats – such as chips, cakes and chocolate – which can cause children to put on excess weight. Try fruit, nuts, or cut up veggies with a low fat dip.
