Perfect Harmony for Mom & Baby

There are approximately 4 million live births in the United States every year. The average age of  first time mothers in the U.S. is 25, up from 21.4 in 1970. Even though we are waiting longer on average to have babies, we are having more of the: The birth rates and fertility rates are the highest they have ever been in the U.S.

While pregnancy and birth are very common occurrences, for many they seem mysterious and nerve-racking.  Though pregnancy is a life changing event, it doesn't have to be scary or a time of confusion. There is a lot of information available to allow your pregnancy to be a comfortable, healthy, exciting time.

Here are a few tips on how to have a healthy and happy pregnancy!

PRENATAL CARE
It is essential to make regular visits to an obstetrician or mid-wife to answer your questions and ensure your pregnancy is on track and free of complications. In the event that complications do arise, your obstetrician is trained to handle them properly. Choose an obstetrician  or mid-wife with whom you are comfortable, as this relationship will be very intimate over the next 40-plus weeks. Research has shown that a lack of prenatal care is associated with 40 percent increase in neonatal death.

PRENATAL VITAMIN
Most healthcare providers recommend taking a prenatal vitamin while trying to become pregnant, or at least as soon as you find out you are pregnant. Prenatal vitamins contain vital vitamins and minerals, such as iron, calcium, and folic acid, which are critical for proper fetal growth and development.

Folic acid, a B vitamin found mostly in leafy green vegetables and enriched grains, is especially important in early pregnancy. According to the FDA, 400mcg of folic acid daily reduces of neural tube defects.

Isotonix Prenatal Multivitamin is an excellent option for prenatal supplementation. Containing much of the Recommended Daily Allowance of the key vitamins and nutrients needed for an expectant mother, including 800mcg of folic acid. Isotonix Prenatal Multivitamin offers a unique isotonic-capable delivery system, eliminating the sometimes-difficult issue of pill swallowing for women plagued with morning sickness.*

DIET
Getting proper nutrition is an essential par4t of pregnancy. Remember that you are not only feeding your body right, but providing the nutrition for the baby as well. Most healthcare providers recommend getting approximately 300  more calories daily than usual - and of course these calories should come from unprocessed, healthy foods rather than junk food. With pregnancy often comes the ever-popular craving. It is okay to satisfy your cravings occasionally (however odd they may be!), but don't let them get in the way of proper nutrition.  Avoid dangerous substances such as alcohol and tobacco (including  second hand smoke) completely.

EXERCISE
Light exercise is very healthy and appropriate during pregnancy. It can alleviate the fatigue commonly associated with pregnancy, and may even help lighten some morning sickness symptoms. Studies also show that women who exercise regularly during pregnancy return to their pre-pregnancy weight faster than those who do not exercise during pregnancy.

Walking and swimming are excellent choices for light exercise that can be enjoyed by most pregnant women. If you frequently participated in rigorous exercise prior to pregnancy, you may even be able to continue the same routine during pregnancy, but do not exercise without first consulting with your doctor.

SLEEP
Everyone will tell you to sleep as much as you can now because your sleeping will never be the same after the baby is born. While this is true, sleep is also important for health reasons. Your body is taking on a brand new challenge that is very unlike its normal tasks -  it is vital to allow it to rest and rejuvenate as much as you can.

Pregnancy is a very momentous, miraculous time in a women's life. Take the time to enjoy it - there is a truly nothing like it. Keeping these tips in mind will ensure a healthy and happy pregnancy, topped only by the moment that sweet little one is placed in your arms for the first time. Congratulation!
